Before we launched ProsumersChoice.com, we knew we wanted to be more than just another digitally native vertical brand. We are a company made up of Millennials, Gen Xers, and Baby Boomers united around a common cause—our commitment to the environment and socially responsible business practices. In addition to our work with the Forest Stewardship Council® on many of our natural Bamboo products, we proudly support the Business Social Compliance Initiative, an organization that champions the rights of factory and farm workers along with the environment. Why should you care about buying from socially responsible businesses? Well, that’s the big question that many companies can’t or won’t answer. We will.
What Is the BSCI?
The Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) is a supply chain management system for companies that support social compliance and improvements within their factories and farms. An initiative of the Foreign Trade Association (FTA) founded in the 1970s, the BSCI establishes a code of conduct for businesses with global supply chains that want to sell products from ethical international partners. The BSCI sets values and principles to apply all along supply chains, from the environment where raw materials are extracted to factories where products are made for customers.
When you buy a product from a company that supports the BSCI, you pledge to put people first. You pledge to promote labor standards that protect workers’ rights. Your purchase goes towards factories and farms that pay fair wages, adhere to occupational safety and health standards, and do not employ under-age workers. When you buy from a brand that supports the BSCI, your money benefits those who offer reasonable wages as well as humane working conditions. Basically, you know you are not buying a product that comes from factories or farms that engage in corruption or discrimination.
Why Do We Support the BSCI?
When you purchase a product, do you ever think about how it got to your doorstep? Why would you? It’s the eco-friendly Bamboo standing desk converter you need, the natural Bamboo iMac monitor stand you want. Who cares where the product came from originally?
Yet many of the products you buy come from factories overseas where workers are paid very little. Low wages are often why you’re able to get a standing desk converter or a monitor riser at a bargain price. Instead of focusing solely on cost, ask yourself whether the factories you’re buying from are safe for workers. Are the employees paid a decent wage for their hard work? These are questions we asked before we launched the Prosumer’s Choice brand and why we support the BSCI. How do we do it? We educate our global supply chain partners and encourage social responsibility through the way we do business. We also give preference to international supply chain partners who abide by the BSCI Code of Conduct as well as those who are audited as socially responsible.
Will our brand sell more products because we prefer BSCI compliant supply chain partners? Maybe or maybe not. But we’re not working within the BSCI model to boost sales. We’re doing this because it’s right and we want to feel good about what we do every day, too!
