- Wipe your cutting board down with a clean, dry rag and mild soap. Then rinse it thoroughly with warm water.
- Avoid soaking your bamboo. Although bamboo is non-porous, it’s best not to immerse your cutting board in water. Bamboo prefers a rinse rather than a soak.
- Don’t clean your cutting board in the dishwasher. This is a very common question we get from customers. Lots of people ask, Can I put a bamboo cutting board in the dishwasher? We advise against using a dishwasher as the cleaning process may impact your cutting board’s finish. Feel free to use your dishwasher for storage purposes.
- Place the cutting board upright to let it air dry after rinsing. Let your cutting board air dry for a few hours or overnight before storing it away. This process prevents potentially harmful moisture and bacteria accumulation.
- Gently remove any food with a plastic scraper. Avoid using metal scrub brushes if there is food stuck on the board.
- Don’t use harsh chemicals, rubbing alcohol, or bleach. If your cutting board develops any strange odors, wipe it down with lemon juice and baking soda.
Oiling Your Bamboo Cutting Board
In addition to cleaning, your bamboo cutting board will need to be oiled or seasoned as some chefs say. Oiling helps keep the bamboo moist and prevents drying or cracking. Here’s your guide to oiling your cutting board:
- Treat your cutting board with food-safe mineral oil. Be sure to apply the mineral oil at least once a month for optimum performance.
- Use a generous amount of oil and apply with a clean, dry cloth. Don’t forget to treat the sides and underneath the board as those areas need attention as well.
- Don’t use cooking oils. Some cooking oils can go rancid, which is why we recommend mineral oil as a safe alternative.
- Air dry overnight and rinse before use. This is similar to the process you used for cleaning your cutting board. Even though mineral oil is safe for human consumption, you’ll want to rinse off any excess so as not to interfere with the flavors you prepare.
