Calling all culinary artists! We know you love having our premium End Grain Bamboo Cutting Board workstation in your kitchen because it’s packed with useful features that fit your modern lifestyle.
Have you ever wondered how our Product Managers dreamed up this kitchen essential? We sat down with our resident Bamboo master, Christopher, to see what inspired him to build this innovative product for you. Read on to discover how your favorite cutting board came to be.
#1) Why did you decide to build this product?
I wanted to address a need I saw within the kitchen utensils industry that combines function and convenience. There are countless cutting boards coming out on almost a weekly basis and they all claim to offer superior cutting/chopping. Of course everyone wants a cutting board for these basic tasks, yet I wanted to look beyond the obvious and build something truly useful to fit contemporary kitchens.
I thought about the way most people prepare meals now. Whether you’re a chef, a foodie, or just someone who likes to cook at home, you probably want your digital device with you in the kitchen. You might use your Smartphone or Tablet to read recipes on Pinterest or other social media sites, follow along with cooking shows, or just read culinary articles while you work. So you want to have your device front and center where you can easily see it instead of hunting around for it all the time. That’s why I designed our 3-in-1 cutting board with a removeable, secure Smartphone/Tablet stand. This way you can keep your favorite device within arm’s reach and detach it from the butcher block so nothing accidentally spills on it.
What makes this product the ultimate cutting board to me is the combination of the detachable device stand and built-in knife holder. As the old saying goes, the difference between a Chef & a Cook is that a Chef stays organized. The knife holder makes it easy for you to stay organized by putting your most used knives in a quickly accessible spot. Most cooking enthusiasts utilize a different variety of knife types, so having them within reach is a must have feature.
#2) What inspired you to use Bamboo materials?
I know that Bamboo is a super-renewable resource, which helps promote a healthy ecosystem, and its dense natural composition helps resist water penetration. I think that makes Bamboo perfect for a cutting board because the material absorbs minimal liquid, which reduces unhealthy bacteria formation. Also Bamboo is less porous and considered harder than wood. Many food bloggers already attest to Bamboo’s benefits in the kitchen, so I wanted to use the best possible material that I knew would meet people’s needs.
#3) How would you describe the knife work on this cutting board?
Its natural Bamboo composition allows it to be more robust, durable, and gentle on knives than other alternatives such as Maple wood. Bamboo actually has a self-healing nature, which means the fibers are open and allow the surface to take the impacts & vibrations of knife edges gently. This also prevents dulling your knives, which often happens over time when working with Walnut or other kinds of wooden cutting boards.
#4) What exactly does End-grain mean? Please explain the benefits of End-grain like this cutting board vs Edge-grain alternatives.
Simply put, End-grain cutting boards are generally given a lot more attention & detailed craftsmanship than Edge-grain designs. Usually Edge-grain costs less because it doesn’t use as much material and requires less work to make the pattern; however, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Edge-grain designs lack longevity whereas End-grain boards are made by a lengthy process of slicing bamboo into blocks and tightly bonding the blocks back together. The bonding process adds strength, and gives the design eye appeal because it forms a unique pattern on the board’s surface.
End-grain cutting boards are known to be more gentle on knives and show minimal scratches in comparison to other Edge-grain or Long grain cutting boards as well. This goes back to the self-healing nature of Bamboo, which the End grain design compliments. The Bamboo fibers are supposed to open up and smoothly take the knife edge & its impacts. So in short, when it comes to durability and knife-friendliness, I believe End-grain gets a thumbs up.
#5) Would you say this Bamboo cutting board is tough enough for heavy daily use? Foodies want to know!
YES! I think you’d be hard pressed to find anything sturdier than our 2 inch thick cutting board with a built-in juice-trap. I mention the juice trap because excess runoff reduces the mess on your chopping surface. The juice-trap in our model decreases liquid absorption on the chopping base, which proves invaluable for heavy daily use. I think we created a handy hybrid between a heavy-duty chopping block and a conventional cutting board, which makes our 3-in-1 End-grain Cutting Board a step above most cutting boards on the market today. In other words, it’s an excellent choice for your home!
